Frequently asked questions.

Everything you need to know about Thendrask Launcher - safety, compatibility, modpack sources, and how it compares to other launchers.

Safety & Trust
Is Thendrask Launcher safe?
Yes. Thendrask Launcher is fully open-source under the MIT license - its code is public on GitHub and can be audited. It uses Microsoft's official OAuth flow, supports approved Modrinth and CurseForge downloads, and stores only an OS-keychain-encrypted refresh token. Your password is never seen or stored.
Is Thendrask Launcher a hacked client or cheat client?
No, not at all. Thendrask Launcher does not modify Minecraft game files, inject code into the JVM, or provide any in-game advantage. It is simply an interface that downloads modpacks and launches the official game.
Is my Microsoft account safe?
Yes. Thendrask Launcher uses Microsoft's official OAuth flow via msmc. Your password is entered on Microsoft's own login page - Thendrask Launcher never sees it. Only an encrypted refresh token is stored in your OS keychain, the same way Windows and other apps manage credentials.
Does Thendrask Launcher modify my existing Minecraft installation?
No. Each instance gets its own isolated .minecraft folder. Your existing Minecraft installation, the official launcher, and any other third-party launchers you use are completely untouched.
Getting Started
Is Thendrask Launcher free?
Yes, completely free. Thendrask Launcher is MIT-licensed and open-source with no paid tier, no ads inside the launcher, and no required subscription. If it saves you hassle, you can optionally support development on Buy Me a Coffee or via a Stripe subscription - but that's never required to use the launcher.
How do I install a modpack?
Open Thendrask Launcher, sign in with your Microsoft account, then open the browser in Library. Choose Modrinth or CurseForge, find a pack, and hit Install. You can also use the Library import button for Modrinth .mrpack and CurseForge ZIP files. If a CurseForge author blocks third-party downloads, the accessible files still install and the remaining items appear in a verified manual-file checklist.
How do I update Thendrask Launcher?
Thendrask Launcher checks GitHub Releases automatically. When a new build ships, an update banner appears inside the app within minutes - click it to download and install the update without leaving the launcher.
Compatibility
What modpack sources does Thendrask Launcher support?
Public beta builds can browse and install from Modrinth and approved CurseForge access. FTB, FTB Legacy, ATLauncher, and Technic provider code is excluded from the repository and public build pending provider approval. Existing local instances, MRPACK/CurseForge ZIP imports, and manually installed files remain available.
What does the GregTech Hub do?
The optional GregTech Hub brings GT New Horizons tools into a dedicated launcher tab. It can check official stable or opt-in beta updates, migrate an updated pack into a fresh instance while preserving the old one, create isolated special-build instances, search compatible mods, and install curated community add-ons pinned to verified GTNH versions. You can enable or disable the Hub during setup or later in Settings.
What Java version do I need?
No separate Java installation is required. Thendrask determines the Java version required by each Minecraft release and downloads a compatible runtime when necessary. Advanced users can still select a custom Java installation in Settings.
How do sanitized diagnostics work?
The diagnostics tool creates a ZIP you choose to export. It includes environment details and recent launcher or game logs useful for troubleshooting, while removing known credentials and authentication tokens. Review the archive before sharing it and attach it only to a report you trust.
Does Thendrask Launcher work on Mac or Linux?
Yes. Windows x64 is the stable build. macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Linux builds are available as public betas from GitHub Releases. The macOS build is currently unsigned, while Linux is offered as AppImage and DEB; see the release notes for the latest installation guidance.
Comparisons
Thendrask Launcher vs CurseForge - what's the difference?
CurseForge is a commercial launcher centred on its own catalogue. Thendrask Launcher is ad-free and open-source, with approved CurseForge and Modrinth browsing plus pack imports, custom instances, recovery tools, friends, and server monitoring. CurseForge access uses the hosted Thendrask relay, so users do not enter their own API key.
Thendrask Launcher vs Prism Launcher - what's the difference?
Prism is a Qt-based launcher focused on flexibility and very low resource usage - a great choice if you prefer a traditional interface and minimal overhead. Thendrask Launcher is Electron/React-based with a more polished, modern interface and built-in social features like friends, presence, and server monitoring. Pick Prism for raw efficiency; pick Thendrask Launcher for a curated, visually modern experience with shader auto-install and in-app updates.
Is Thendrask Launcher affiliated with Mojang or Microsoft?
No. Thendrask Launcher is an independent, community-built project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or associated with Mojang Studios or Microsoft. Minecraft is a trademark of Mojang Studios. You still need a genuine Minecraft account to play.
